Big machines, big changes in North Lawrence

The Bowersock Mills and Power Company recently requested to store a crane on the north shore of the Kaw River. The crane would be used to build Bowersock's north shore hydroelectric plant. It would be stored on the west side of Johnny's Tavern from the end of this month until completion of the project.

The Bowersock Mills and Power Company recently requested to store a crane on the north shore of the Kaw River.

The plant currently produces enough energy to power about 1,800 homes. With the addition of the North Shore Plant, the company would be able to provide energy to power about 6,000 homes.

Nathan Walker, Bowersock’s owners representative, said the company is talking to several power purchasers of the energy to finance the project.

“Once that gets ironed out, we can go to obtain our financing through the bond market or financial institutions and that should be right in line with the construction so we can begin in early January,” Walker said.

Architectural plans are complete and most licensing has been granted. Details of financing and internal plant design are currently the only hold-ups to beginning the project.
