Kansas Relays: Kansas dominates 1500m race

Kansas runners juniors Don Wassinger and Rebeka Stowe took away victories in the men's and women's 1500-meter races Saturday. Stowe finished with a time of 4:28.19. Wassinger edged out Stanley Kebeni of Iowa Central CC with a time of 3:44.89.

Stowe ran the same time in the 2010 KU Relays and is pleased with the time.

"Honestly, I haven't been running well this year so it was exciting to get back to where I was so I can be moving forward now," Stowe said.

Wassinger surpassed his goal of running around a 3:46 cutting it down by a little over a second.

"Fastest time in the Big 12 this year so that's legit," Wassinger said.

Stowe will be preparing for an upcoming steeple chase for her next meet and Wassinger will be looking to continue cutting time to prepare for Big 12 and NCAA meets.

Elite distance runner Will Leer dethroned last year’s Kansas Relays winner, Peter va der Westhuize by just more than a second in the Glen Cunningham Mile.

Leer, whose personal best in the mile is 3:56.63, finished with a 4:03.95 despite the 55-degree chill and wind.

“All that was important was getting out here, busting some of the winter rust and competing,” Leer said.

This was the first time Leer has run at Kansas.
