It may be a surprise that not many emergencies came into Lawrence Memorial Hospital on a snowy day like today.

Snow Storm
Photos from the snow storm on Tuesday. Classes were canceled and Gov. Sam Brownback signed a State of Disaster Emergency Declaration early Tuesday morning.
“We’re slower than usual but [Monday] we saw quite a few slips and falls,” said Joan Harvey, Lawrence Memorial Hospital emergency room director.
“We saw 30 fall patients [Monday] and they were generally the broken bones, sprains and bruises,” said Belinda Rehmer, Lawrence Memorial Hospital communications coordinator. But they had only three weather-related injuries on Tuesday and none of them were admitted, she said.
Harvey said people must pay attention to warnings to stay inside.
She said it was definitely a good idea to close all businesses and schools that did not have to be open, keeping people off the road who aren’t needed for emergencies.
“Keeping people home helped us out. It keeps people from wrecking and helps with slips and falls,” said Bill Spark, division chief at the Lawrence Fire and Medical Deparment. He said the advanced warning of this storm helped the department prepare.
Both Lawrence Fire and Medical and the Lawrence Police Department are ready for anything that might come as the storm progresses.
“We’re open 24 hours, and it’s just like any other day for us,” Harvey said.
