With classes canceled Tuesday and "snowmageddon" keeping many cars from moving, students frequented the bars within walking distance of campus. The Wheel, 507 W. 14th St., opened its kitchen and bar at 11 a.m., and the Hawk, 1340 Ohio St., opened at noon, seven hours earlier than its normal weekday hours. An employee who opened the bar said that there were around 70 people in the bar between noon and 2 p.m., and as the day went on, the bar got even more crowded.

Snow Storm
Photos from the snow storm on Tuesday. Classes were canceled and Gov. Sam Brownback signed a State of Disaster Emergency Declaration early Tuesday morning.
"It was really busy, way more packed than a game day because everyone was smushed inside," Krissy Head, a senior from Overland Park, said.
Around 6 p.m., after the announcement that classes would be canceled Wednesday, The Jayhawk Café, 1340 Ohio St., tweeted that they would be opening early again Wednesday morning. Other bars, like the Phoggy Dog, 2228 Iowa St., which opened at 4 p.m. Tuesday, also maintained steady business from college students celebrating the day away from classes.
Richie Welton, a senior from Topeka, walked from 31st and Crestline to The Phoggy Dog to celebrate.
"One day, I will tell my son, ‘I have not climbed Everest, but I did walk two miles to the Phoggy Dog in the worst blizzard Lawrence has seen in a decade,’" Welton said.
