The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC will broadcast from Free State Brewery tonight at 8 p.m.
The show’s decision to broadcast from Lawrence came as a surprise to Alex Hamilton, manager of the downtown restaurant.
“They called us on Tuesday out of the blue,” Hamilton said.
He said he expected the restaurant to fill up quickly in anticipation of the show. Hamilton also said he intended to strictly adhere to the building’s maximum occupancy of 231 people.
“Rachel Maddow apparently draws a pretty big crowd,” Hamilton said. “We’re going to make sure everything is safe.”
The show will follow up on its coverage of the 2009 murder of physician George Tiller, director of a medical clinic in Wichita that provided late-term abortions. Reporters and producers for the show have been in Kansas this week conducting interviews.
MSNBC Spokeswoman Lauren Skowronski said the show was following the controversy surrounding Tiller’s death and the disciplinary hearing of former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline.
Though the Rachel Maddow Show is widely considered a left-leaning, Hamilton said Free State was open to everyone.
“If Bill O’Reilly wanted to do a show here we would probably let him do it,” he said.
