Students on campus fight the sleet and rain on their way to and from classes. The Topeka National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The Topeka National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Douglas County for the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sleet and freezing rain are forecasted for the morning hours, into late morning, according to the weather advisory report.
The heaviest precipitation is expected in the afternoon hours.
Total snow and sleet is expected to accumulate to one half to one inch. In the evening, 3 to 5 inches of snow is possible.
Winds from the north to northeast of 15 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts of 30 miles per hour are expected.
"Our prediction is that conditions will deteriorate rapidly toward the afternoon hours," said Michael Chouch, observing program leader for the Topeka National Weather Service.
Couch said the prediction is that the afternoon will bring the most hazardous weather situations.
"We're timing it for the afternoon commute and after school. It will be very treacherous," said Couch.
The ground is still warm and it will take time for ice to accumulate, but it is expected that with the rapid precipitation, it will accumulate by late afternoon, said Couch.
Couch, who maintains the observation systems for the Topeka National Weather Service, said temperatures in the last seven days plummeted from 75 degrees, on the 20th of February, to a low of 17 degrees on February 22nd. Although this week yielded a 58-degree stretch, temperatures today are expected to be in the 30s, said Couch.
KU facilities and operations has not yet started to treat roads but Larry Rawlings, assistant director of Facilities Operations said that KU facilities and operations is keeping a close eye on the situation incase road treatment will be necessary.
“It just depends on what turns into liquid and what doesn’t,” Rawlings said.
