The Beak: Naismith rules exhibit closing

Summer editor-in-chief Alex Garrison is bringing back our news blog experiment, The Beak, to keep Kansan.com updated with short news stories and links, while we have just one print edition per week (out on Wednesdays — do check it out if you're on campus!).

If you have any news tips for The Beak, please send them to editor@kansan.com or tweet us @TheKansan_News.

Squawks from The Beak today:

This weekend is likely your last chance to check out the Nelson-Atkins Museum's display of Dr. James Naismith's original rules of basketball document. After an extension a few weeks ago, the museum is closing the exhibit tomorrow.

The "birth certificate" of basketball is 13 rules on two sheets of paper, written out by Naismith's secretary 120 years ago.

Long-time donors to the University David and Suzanne Booth bought the document for more than $4 million in an auction in December. The Booths have talked of "bringing it back" to campus ever since, but KU officials still have not made any announcement of plans to display.

Read more about this historic document at our story covering the opening of the display back in March.

Update: I spoke with Kathleen Leighton, the Nelson-Atkins' media relations officer, who said the exhibit had been a popular feature and a big hit for the museum officials, who saw it as a good opportunity to get people who perhaps wouldn't normally visit an art gallery into the space. She described the sports-based exhibit as a display of "creativity in a whole new area." She confirmed that the document is going back to the Booths with no immediate plans for display in Lawrence.

The Kansan will continue to keep an eye on any developments.
