With the addition of last week’s Blood Drive, The KU Blood Drive Committee has surpassed last year’s collection total. The 652 units collected last week and 1,030 last fall are the most combined units (Red Cross and Community Blood Center) that the drive has brought in over the past several years.
Part of the reason why the committee was able to collect so many donations this year was because of the leadership of one senior.
Kelly Unger, a senior from Overland Park and president of the KU Blood Drive Committee, was recognized by the American Red Cross Blood Services with the Red Cross Special Volunteer Award after last week’s drive.
Bev Kerbs, Red Cross donor recruitment representative, said Unger was chosen for the award because of her passion and dedication in helping save lives.
“Kelly was very good at motivating others, and also a dedicated blood donor herself,” Kerbs said.
Unger joined the KU Blood Drive Committee her freshman year, helping by promoting blood drives on campus and recruiting new donors at sign-up tables. Eventually, she took on additional responsibilities such as committee registration, summer interest survey registration and event approval. She has also arranged for Red Cross to collect blood at her sorority house, Kappa Delta, for the past three years.
“She organized all theh volunteers, recruited blood donors and made herself available at the drive to ensure its success,” Kerbs said. “She has done a great job on the committee and will be greatly missed.”
