The second thing Bob Woodward thinks about each morning — after the bathroom — is a nagging question that has driven him as a journalist for more than 40 years.
“What are the bastards thinking?” he asked a crowded audience at the Dole Institute of Politics Sunday afternoon.
It’s his unparalleled ability to answer that question that led him to become one of best investigative reporters in American history.
Woodward was the guest speaker for the annual Dole Lecture. For more than an hour, Woodward spoke candidly about his 40-year career at the Washington Post, where he now works as an associate editor.
Woodward spoke at length about Watergate and his extensive interviews with George W. Bush. His six interviews with the former president formed the foundation of his four bestselling books he wrote about the Bush presidency.
When asked whether he thought the Iraq War was a mistake, Woodward said he didn’t know.
Investigative reporter and non-fiction author Bob Woodward speaks at Dole Institute of Politics on Sunday afternoon. Woodward was the renowned pioneer for investigative journalism in the 70’s for his coverage on the Watergate scandal with colleague Carl Bernstein. Woodward is attributed with numerous Pulitzer Prizes won by the Washington Post and he is the author of 15 national bestselling non-fiction books.
Woodward also talked about President Barack Obama’s re-election bid and the legacy of Bob Dole, whom he said he admired for his honesty and decency.
“I always thought the missing quality in American politics was straight talk,” Woodward said.
Woodward said he was surprised Obama didn’t give Bush more credit for the capture of Osama bin Laden. He said they both deserved credit for the 11-year manhunt, but that he was impressed by Obama’s leadership.
“Certainly there was an element of guts in this,” Woodward said about Obama’s decision to attack bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, earlier this month.
Woodward last visited the University of Kansas in 2000 as the recipient of the William Allen White Award. He has won two Pulitzer Prizes and has co-authored 15 books, all of which been national non-fiction bestsellers.
