The grading scale: KU knocks out OU to earn the grade

Senior guard Tyshawn Taylor:

Taylor has been playing with great consistency and it was no different against Oklahoma on Monday. Taylor is proving to look like a legitimate All-American or at the least All-Big 12. He is a blaze running down the court and can cause havoc for opposing defenses, just like he did against OU. Taylor had a team-high 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He also added six assists to go with the points. He continues to be a mismatch for opposing defenses as they try to figure out how to stop him, or at least, contain him.

Grade: A

Junior guard Elijah Johnson:

Johnson played a much better game against OU than he did against Iowa State. He filled out the box score and had an all-around good game. He had seven points on 2-of-8 shooting. Both of his basketswere from behind the arc, an area that he has been struggling with a lot lately. Johnson played tough defense as he got three steals and then added three assists on the offensive end. He still needs to produce on a regular basis to help the Jayhawks continue to win, but this was one of his better games.

Grade: B+

Junior guard Travis Releford:

Releford continues to be reliable on both the defense and offense. He was efficient from the field going 5-of-6 for 12 points. He added six rebounds, three of which were off the offensive glass. He continues to be a great defender while contributing to the offense . He is as steady as they come and is Mr. Reliable. He’ll need to continue to play this way when they face Missouri on Saturday.

Grade: B+

Junior forward Thomas Robinson:

National Player of the Year? After a subpar performance against Iowa State, Robinson bounced back in terrific fashion. He was dominate throughout the game and OU had no answer for him. Offensively, he went 9-of-12 from the field for 20 points. He also added four assists. As for the defensive end, OU couldn’t get anywhere near the ball after a miss. He had 17 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. It was the third game this year that Robinson finished with at least 20 points and 17 rebounds.for at least 20 points and 17 rebounds.

Grade: A+

Junior center Jeff Withey:

The big man didn’t have the rebounds and blocks he normally has, but that’s because Robinson on his game Withey had a great game by offensive standards compared to minutes played and points scored. He played 20 minutes and had 15 points. The balk of his points came from the stripe. He went 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Withey altered numerous shots, like he normally does, making it difficult for OU to get to the rim with consistency. Withey added two boards, two assists, a block and a steal to his box score. A much better outing then his last game against the Cyclones.

Grade: A

Senior guard Conner Teahan:

The shots have been off the mark for Teahan as of late. It seems like he couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He needs to see a couple three’s go in, in order to regain his confidence. He played 20 minutes and had just three points on 1-of-5 shooting and 1-of-3 from downtown. If he can see a couple shots go in during game play, it’ll build his confidence and allow him to be an effective player while on the court. He did have an assist, an offensive rebound and a steal. But Teahan needs his shots to go in to help out this team.

Grade: D+

Sophomore forward Justin Wesley:

Wesley played a smarter 11 minutes than he has in the past. He shot one-for-one from the field He’ll need to continue to play smart to earn more minutes. If he can stay out of foul trouble and shoot effectively, he’ll be alright. During the OU game, he did just that. A solid effort for him.

Grade: C+

Junior forward Kevin Young:

Young played his most minutes since the Jayhawks faced the Cyclones at home on January 14. Granted, he got some extra time since the starters were pulled with the big lead, but he played well during the stretch he was in. He went 2-of-2 shooting for four points. But he did have turnover issues (3) and he did have three fouls in the short stint. Like Wesley, Young needs to be effective in the short stints in order to garner more playing time each game.

Grade: C+

Overall Performance:

The Jayhawks had a slow start against the Sooners, possibly looking forward to the Border War on Saturday. They went into halftime with just a three point lead, but then came out on fire in the second half. They showed they weren’t going to let an OU team distract them and put them away. That three point lead escalated to a 22 point cap when the final buzzer sounded. When the five Jayhawk starters left the court with 3:15 left in the game, the Jayhawks were flexing their strength as they were up 80-51. The Jayhawks had a great game shooting the ball, 55 percent from the field including 30 percent from behind the arc. The biggest thing that the Jayhawks continue to do is knock down their free throws, which is key with having dominate big men on the inside. They shot 80 percen from the stripe They rebounded and distributed the ball well, while not turning it over. According to ESPN.com, the Jayhawks have gone 225 games without consecutive defeats, by far the longest streak in the nation. The next closest current streak is Duke with 110 games. The Jayhawks will now have the taste of victory back in their mouth as they travel to Columbia, Mo., to face the Tigers on Saturday.
