Students got a taste of Europe and Asia Sunday afternoon at the fourth annual International Film and Food Festival in the Woodruff Auditorium at the Kansas Union.
Nine short films were shown, including films from France, South Korea, Italy, Georgia and the United Kingdom. Four student films were also selected for the festival, allowing the student directors the chance to win a prize. This year, the festival also included food from the same countries as the movies, which was prepared by Union Programs.
“We thought it would be great to introduce the five different countries’ food and bring an international aspect as well,” Stephanie Joffe, assistant coordinator for Student Union Activities’ Films and Media said.
The food included Khachapuri, a Georgian bread, Maejakgwa, ginger cookies from South Korea and eclairs from France. An antipasto tray of salami, peppers and fresh mozzarella represented Italy while the United Kingdom table offered Yorkshire pudding muffins filled with sweet onion and sausage.
The Guanajuato International Film Festival, the International Student Association and the University International Family Association co-sponsored the event.
Seyool Oh, a doctoral student from Jinhae, South Korea and president of the International Family Association said that his organization became involved to offer international students with a spouse or children a way to participate in an event with traditional students.
“They would like to study and enjoy University life, but sometimes it is a struggle,” Oh said. “It’s good to gather together for international families.”
Gonzalo Garcia, a doctoral student from Viña del Mar, Chili, brought his wife and kids to the festival. Garcia said the transition has been hard on his family, especially on his wife who misses her native country, so having activities that they can do together in the community helps them feel included.
“We like to do things with our son and have a fun time on Sunday,” Garcia said.
For student filmmakers, the festival was a chance to get input from viewers. Edward Schiver, a senior from Berryton, Kan., directed one of the student film entries, “Rabbit’s Foot.” He also helped edit his friend’s film, “Hi-Run.” Josh Doke, a senior from Goodland, directed “Hi-Run,” which is a film about a pool player asked to throw a match.
“Its cool to hear peoples’ reaction,” said Schiver. “When you get to hear the audience and whatever their reactions are to a certain scene, it kind of helps you know if you need to fix something or it sounds cheesy.”
Student winners were announced at the end of the festival. Schiver placed third and Jason Badgett, a first year graduate student from Paola, who directed the film “Love and Buns: The Hot Dog House” placed second. Doke was the first prize winner and received a cash prize and an optional internship in Mexico.
