Charlie Weis landed his third former 5-star recruit when former Bishop Miege wide receiver Justin McCay announced he would transfer to Kansas on Friday. McCay appeared in three games for the Sooners this season after redshirting his first year.
McCay was the number one recruit out of Kansas for the class of 2010, according to Rivals.com. He will enroll at Kansas in the spring semester. McCay made his decision after visiting Kansas on January 4 and attending the Kansas-Kansas State basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse.
In his senior season, McCay caught 46 passes for 926 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Stags. He led the Stags to the 2009 Kansas Class 4A state champions.
At Kansas, McCay will reunite with his high school Coach, Tim Grunhard. Weis hired Grunhard in December to be his offensive line coach.
According to the Big 12 conference handbook, rule 6.3, an intra-conference transfer must “forfeit one season of competition” in addition to completing “one full academic year of residence."
This means that if McCay can’t acquire a Big 12 waiver, the 6-2, 209 pound receiver will have to sit out two seasons before competing.
If a waiver is granted, McCay will be eligible for the 2013 season.
McCay joins quarterbacks Dane Christ and Jake Heaps as big name recruits transferring to Kansas after the quarterbacks made their announcements to transfer to Kansas in late December.
