Crystal Hong, Rose Hill senior, and her partner Jocelyn Bencken, were married in Florida in March over Spring Break. Crystal came out as a lesbian to her mother during her senior year of high school but has not yet come out to her father. While some lesbian and gay students finally feel free to come out to their parents once in college, others hesitate for fear of rejection or loss of financial support, or both. Although they were supportive at first, her mother later revealed her disappointment at losing her dream of Thompson getting married and having children. Ashlynn Horras, Knoxville, Iowa, junior, had to face angry and disappointing reactions from her father and stepmother after it was revealed she had a girlfriend. Her father blamed himself and asked her what he could have done differently to prevent her from becoming a lesbian. "In his mind, it's not possible to be gay and happy," she said. Julian Rivera, Lenexa senior, struggled with whether he could be both a good son and be gay. His mother found out he was gay after reading an essay by Rivera's sister that referenced his sexuality and was accidentally left out in his parents' kitchen.
