On Oct. 20, Lane and his mother drove to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital emergency room when he began vomitting repeatedly. The incident was just one of an increasingly regular emergency visits to hospital rooms, many of which ended in the intensive care unit. While doctors have determined that he will need a new liver, Lane's ongoing battle with autoimmune disease casts doubt on his long-term chances of survival.

Nurses at Lawrence Memorial Hospital administer emergency dialysis to Jon Lane on Nov. 2. Lane had been diagnosed with acidosis, a condition of high acidity in the blood or plasma, three days ealier. When Lane returned two days later, doctors discovered elevated levels of creatin in his blood and decided to administer the dialysis in combination with antibiotics and intraveneous therapy in order to stabilize his blood chemistry.

Lane and Williams had planned to join Triangle, the engineering fraternity, together. But when Lane began vomitig blood during the first week of classes in August, medical expenses drained Lane's financial resources, leaving him no choice but to live at home with his mother.

Before Lane's condition worsened to the point of constant hospitalization, he spent most of his spare time communicating through the Internet from the Tonganoxie apartment he shares with his mother. After Lane's medical condition decimated the family's finances, their employer arranged a lease in a small complex owned by the restaurant where Lane and his mother worked.
