The Baker Wetlands, extending in the South of Lawrence for about 640 acres, with over 471 documented wildlife species, has been the place for the eastern leg of the South Lawrence Highway since it was proposed in 2002 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Transportation. The Wetlands Preservation Organization has proposed a counter proposal that puts the route south of the Wakarusa river, away from the Wetlands.
