A major part of Jongku's process is the use of adhesive to bond the iron powder to the canvas. Here, he brushes the adhesive on, however he also uses a spray bottle to create certain desired effects like dripping and layering of the powder. The adhesive not only solidifies the material to the canvas, but also affects the state of the powder because of salt used in the adhesive mixture. Published on March 25, 2010 |
After applying a layer of calligraphy and a layer of dripping, Jongku added a second layer of calligraphy in his conversation with the canvas. Jongku spoke of how at a certain point in his work, the conversation between himself and the canvas became more of an argument. Upon completion, the conflict was resolved. After leaving his paintings outside, the iron powder rusted creating rich red layers on the canvas. At this point, Jongku applied additional layers of iron powder on top, creating a sharp contrast of alternating colors and textures. Published on March 25, 2010 |
In Jongku's process, he would stop periodically to talk with the documentary crew to explain the state of his work. Throughout the entire process, the crew was on hand to capture every move the artist made in a effort to provide a comprehensive documentation of Jongku's residency at The University of Kansas. On Thursday Feb. 25, Jongku gave an artist talk at the Spencer Museum of Art, and immediately following his lecture he created his mobile landscape installation piece while guests enjoyed the process from start to finish. His mobile landscape consists of a projected video feed of his iron powder calligraphy which creates the image of a mountainous landscape on the wall of the gallery. Published on March 25, 2010 |
During his process, Jongku left his paintings outside for a period of two days to "let the paintings breathe." During this period, snow and rain moved through the area, causing a drastic change in the state of the iron powder Jongku used in his work. The iron rusted and oxidized due to the weather, which was a welcome change for Jongku. Published on March 25, 2010 |
Throughout his two week residency, Jongku worked with the canvases both the floor and upright against the walls of the gallery space. Working on the floor, Jongku executed the calligraphy and then with the canvas upright, he applied additional powder to create the long streaks dripping down from the words of his poem.
