The name Lawrence was chosen as a tribute to wealthy anti-slavery reformist Amos Lawrence. However, many other names were considered as well. 

In April of 1970, during a time when anti-war and racial tensions were high, the Memorial Union was set on fire, causing nearly a million dollars worth of damage. 

Kansas was not, as legend has it, modeled after the city of Boston. It does, however, share many historical ties with New England.
