Ryan is a senior from Lawrence majoring in photography and minoring in art history. This is his third semester with The Kansan. Previously, he has been a staff photographer. He is currently senior photograpger. His specific interests are shooting sports and producing multimedia work. Although unsure of his specific career path, Ryan would like to work in photography in some regard, journalistic or otherwise.

This staircase behind Budig Hall exemplifies how hollow a space that was designed for people can look when no one’s around. I can see in my mind the crowds navigating these stairs, but at night it feels incomplete.

One of the busiest portions of campus, Jayhawk Boulevard lacks its normal energy and chaos present during the daytime. No students crossing the street, no buses running, no cyclists — just pavement. The texture of the street seems to be accentuated by the glow of the street lights.

I stumbled onto this scene one evening and found the aesthetics irresistible. The image of Watson Library is no doubt familiar, but I wanted the focus here to be on the eerie quality of the atmosphere. It’s astounding to me that no more than six hours before this shot was taken, this scene was packed with pedestrians.

Something as mundane as a concrete staircase can become moving and intriguing after dark. Here, behind Wescoe Hall, I was drawn to the quality of light which creates a misty, haunting feeling. The staircase seems to act like a tunnel of light, leading to the unknown.
