They shared many of the same classes, but it wasn’t until physically bumping into each other while walking into one of their environmental policy courses that they ever spoke. Brian Sifton, Kansas City, Mo, senior, saw this as an opportunity to talk to Lacy Johnston, 2007 graduate, a girl he considered both cool and beautiful. Having just returned from a KU Environs camping trip, Sifton struck up a conversation with Johnston about the microburst that hit Lawrence in spring 2006, and they soon became friends.
They found out they shared the same taste in music, interest in traveling and environmental philosophies.
Not only did Sifton encourage Johnston to get involved with KU Environs, a student organization that promotes the awareness of environmental issues, but he eventually asked her out on a date. Sifton is now the president of KU Environs, and Johnston, who has since graduated, is still involved with the club. “With our schedules being so busy this semester, Environs really helps us get to spend more time with each other,” Johnston says. They have been dating for almost two years.
