The reason that recycling doesn't work in lawrence is because burying our trash is cheaper than recycling it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the areas around lawrence contain soils and geology that is almost perfect for safe disposal of household wastes and trash. It is ridiculously cheap to bury our trash here.

Lawrence already determined that the majority of waste going to the landfill was yard wastes- grass clippings, branches, dirt, leaves, etc. and has instituted a program that picks these items up on a different day. Yard waste is placed in a giant compost pile, composted and offered to the community for free. Additionally, a number of private companies operate in Lawrence which recycle various materials, at an additional cost to the homeowner who wishes to recycle.

Do not forget that some materials cost more to recycle than they do to throw away. The market for recycled aluminum may be very lucrative right now, but the demand for recycled glass is nearly non-existent. Reason? Glass costs more to recycle than it does to produce new glass. Aluminum is almost the same, but the process to refine aluminum takes alot of energy, so the demand for re-used aluminum creates an incentive to recycle. Paper is very valuable in the secondary market as well.

So with no real incentives to recycle more, and limited or no funds available, the city of Lawrence should not institute mandatory recycling. There are more important issues that the city needs to deal with- such as crumbling roads and infrastructure, a public transportation system that is on the verge of financial collapse, outdated fire equipment, just to name a few.

I love me some fried chicken.

"Now, anyone who thinks that Camp B has some kind of moral high ground over Camp A needs to have their head screwed on properly. The only important fact in the hypothetical is this: Beings that we believe have a right to life and the pursuit of happiness are being held against their will and slaughtered. Who the hell cares about the method?"

I care about the method. I want my meats raised in a healthy environment. I don't care what their mood is, but cattle that are raised in the proper conditions produce higher quality meats with less fat, free range chickens don't have to be hopped up on steroids and antibiotics to stay alive can ensure that our medicines will remain effective. I think the way we raise animals isn't exactly the best or healthiest way to do it, but I sure do love meat.

Sure, raising cows, pigs, chickens, and sheep for eating isn't exactly the most efficient way to feed people, but people were made to eat meat. Just like dogs. Just like kitties. Just like bears. People evolved to eat meat.

sometimes it's pure luck. I stumbled in on my job, just walked in and was hired the same day. Had to take a month long training course, but passed it. Didn't have to make a bunch of calls in and I still love my job enough to keep coming back.

My advice? Look off campus. There is lots of competition for on campus jobs. Look away from downtown. Everyone wants to work downtown. The job market is pretty competitive in restaurants and store positions, but there are other positions available in other lines of work that might be easier to get into. Most employers are willing to work around student's schedules- just make sure you tell them ahead of time.

Let us not forget that the University Daily Kansan is a school newspaper. In my opinion it is there to report the useless (and sometimes not so useless) goings on at this university and in the surrounding City of Lawrence. It exists to cover issues directly relating to students. What's going on in Bolivia doesn't affect us directly.

I'm not saying that what's going on in Bolivia isn't important to you or the rest of the world, I'm just saying being the devil's advocate saying that most people here don't care, and that this story belongs in other forms of media which would be reaching people who do care. National Media outlets should be paying attention to this, as well as other global crises happening right now. But a school newspaper? maybe not so much.

That being said, sometimes I can't tell if the Kansan is actually a newspaper, or just toilet paper.

"the only tangible result that i am aware of is that i now am steadfastly against gay rights. i used not have any opinion about the gay rights and just assumed that eventually homosexuals would assimilate all of the rights that heterosexuals enjoy through a lengthy procession of court cases, and the topic would slowly taper out of the public focus."

I was hoping it would "slowly taper out of the public focus" as well. I'm sure my gay friends "like" being in the public spotlight. They "like" pushing their "gay agenda" because it makes you angry and pushes you to make comments like that. The truth is many people want the same rights you and I have as heterosexuals, they want to live freely in a society that does not discriminate against them because of their race, gender or sexual orientation. However, the only way change comes about in this country is by being loud and persistent over a long, long period of time. Until all people enjoy the same rights, privelages, and civil liberties you will continue to hear people fighting for their basic rights, such as civil unions, visitation, shared finances, societal acceptance, and yes, the ability to give blood. Please, todd1007, realize the only agenda that the gay community has is to have the same rights and privelages as you and I, not more rights and privelages or special treatment.

With that being said, I hope Matt Hirschfeld or some other gay guy takes the Red Cross to court. Even if you don't like needles, you should still have the right to help other people out.

On Letter: No such thing as 'gay blood'
