I am a journalism major. I don’t take tests. I don’t memorize things, make flashcards, or read textbooks. This might explain why I felt so overwhelmed in Anschutz Library last week. Midterms are in full swing, and I was meeting my friend for a little western civ. study session. I’ve never partied the night away at Club Anschutz, setting up camp for an all-nighter. I prefer my own desk at home instead.
I went to the second floor and felt like I had walked into a whole new world. A frazzled-looking student surrounded by a flurry of papers occupied every table. There were candy wrappers, discarded coffee cups and energy drinks galore.
I needed an etiquette manual for Club Anschutz. How do I walk up and down the aisles searching for my friend without looking like a creeper? The students were hunched over their books; I had to practically stare at them to recognize who they were. And of course the cell phone gods had frowned upon giving me service down in that dungeon, lest I would need to call her. I imagine people could die down there and no one would notice.
I circled the perimeter with no success, and every attempted phone call went straight to voicemail. "I'm already here though," I thought. "I might as well review on my own"
Then I ran into the next problem: how do I find a table? Oh etiquette manual, where are you? There were no empty tables. What about the tables occupied by only one person, is it socially acceptable to ask them to share? But they were taking up the whole table; it looked like they’d set up camp for good. What’s a girl to do?
But fate presented me with an empty table, and thankfully I didn’t have to tackle that quandary. It’s pathetic to think I’ve made it to my junior year without learning proper library etiquette. I think I’ve managed fine without; I’ll just study at home from now on.

The cell phone part cracks me up. You know, there was a time, not too long ago, when almost no students had cell phones. And guess what? They didn't die. They didn't miss "opportunities of a lifetime" by not taking calls in class. They lived just fine. They found their friends. They did just fine. Plus, you probably shouldn't be talking on your phone in a library. There was a time when libraries were quiet places.
