Have you ever heard stories of the unfortunate people who have contacted a sexually transmitted disease (STD) but in no way, shape or form are they considered to be a manwhore or a slut? For example, what about your friend Tom who made a mistake of cheating on his girlfriend during spring break in the Bahamas with a blond bombshell only to find out he contracted herpes from her after arriving back home? Or how about your friend Susan who lost her virginity to a guy that had syphilis?
These two people are not alone. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four women and nearly one in five men are infected with genital herpes. In the past, people would be ashamed to put themselves back out there in the dating spotlight, but in our day and age there are online dating websites specifically designed for people who have STDs. These websites give people the chance to connect with others who are in the same boat as them. It allows people who are newly diagnosed to express their fears and concerns to those who are long-term survivors. Each website is strictly anonymous and extremely supportive.
In a 2007 Q&A article, Having Sex despite Herpes, Dr. Laura Berman said that a good way to begin easing your way back into a regular sex life may be to check out online dating sites for people with long-lasting STDs. However, a person shouldn’t limit themselves to this forever. If you are honest about your diagnosis at the beginning of a relationship but your partner isn’t willing to deal with it, then he/she isn’t the right one for you anyways. Personally, I think it’s comical when people get disgusted hearing about STD online dating sites because original dating sites don’t publicly address the issue of online dating in the spread of STDs, making their prescribers at a high risk of transmitting a disease. So if you do have a sexually transmitted infection, don’t be embarrassed. Just go to HMates.com and start talking — people already know your status is positive anyways!
