This weekend was by far the nicest weekend (weather-wise) all year. It is a great mood booster to see so many people out and about enjoying the nice weather—whether it was walking on Mass Street or playing flip cup in the front yard. I found myself yearning to get outside to do something…anything. So below is a list of things to do in order to take advantage of a nice day.
First, open all the windows and shades. Not only does this help air out your house or apartment after a long winter of being closed up, but it also saves on electricity because you’re letting in natural light and turning off the heat. This is also a great opportunity to clean up your place a bit.
I found myself wanting to exercise outside but because of the high pollen counts recently, it makes it more difficult for those of us suffering from allergies. However, going for walks is a viable option. It’s exercise plus you get to see things that you might not notice while driving. You can also make it into a routine by gathering friends and walking in groups, this way it becomes a social activity, as well.
Going to local parks is a great way to relieve some of the stored up winter energy. Whether playing tennis, pitch and catch, Frisbee, or even lying on a blanket soaking in the sun, people watching, reading a book or studying, parks provide a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, Lawrence has plenty of options, from South Park to Clinton Lake.
If you’re a sports fan, there are plenty of opportunities to combine sports and nice weather. Go support the Jayhawks and go to baseball, softball and soccer games, all of which are free with a valid student ID.
Another great social activity, and a potentially more tasty method of cooking, is grilling. The smell of a grill is enough to make you either want to join those already grilling or grill yourself. Inviting friends and asking each to bring a dish can help cut costs of hosting, while also ensuring a variety of food. Let guests know what you will provide and what they should bring. Eating is a communal activity and one that can be a lot of fun.
As Spring fever settles in, it is fun to come up with different activities to do on nice days. These are just some of the good things I find to do, but I’m always looking for new suggestions.
