Eat this: Pretzel Charcuterie Plate at the Jayhawker

The Pretzel Charcuterie Plate at the Jayhawker restaurant inside the Eldridge Hotel takes charcuterie boards to the next level with a jumbo soft pretzel and beer cheese.

Charcuterie boards are all the craze right now. They’ve landed on restaurant starter menus, been featured at dinner parties and even fill Instagram pages.

If you’re like me, you had no clue what “charcuterie” was when you first heard the word. A charcuterie board is a combination of cured meat, cheese, fruit, crackers, nuts, veggies and other finger foods.

While most boards are similar in appearance, there is one that stands out in Lawrence: the Pretzel Charcuterie Plate at The Jayhawker located inside the Eldridge Hotel at 701 Massachusetts St. This assorted plate features a jumbo soft pretzel among meat, cheese, almonds, berries and beer cheese.

Emily Lavender, the Jayhawker and Eldridge House Grille restaurant manager, says the Pretzel Charcuterie Plate is a popular item among guests, especially on Thursday evenings when martinis are $6. “We’ve definitely sold out of it before,” Lavender says. This unique charcuterie plate costs $14 and feeds two to six people.

The Jayhawker also serves a $9 mini charcuterie plate without the soft pretzel or beer cheese during happy hour from 3-6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Lavender says the food on both charcuterie plates can be adjusted to fit dietary needs.

If you’re feeling frugal, find inspiration through Charcuterie by Rachel, a Lawrence and Kansas City-based charcuterie caterer with an Instagram page almost as beautiful as the boards she crafts. Rachel Johnson, the charcuterie crafter behind the page, says beginners should keep it simple and bargain shop for the food because it can get expensive.

“Start with the basics and you can get super creative,” Johnson says.

This creative appetizer is a great way to bring friends and family together, Johnson says. So, the next time you have a girl’s night out, a guy’s night in or a family dinner, try a charcuterie plate for a fresh new appetizer.
